Philippe Starck's proved he can do irony--the Louis Ghost chair made me crack up the first time I saw it, and have you seen the gnome furniture? But he can also do pure, elegant functionalism. In fact, he's been doing it for Emeco for a while now, and the Icon chair is probably the most rigorous example. It has nothing extra, but touches like the curve of the back legs make up for what might otherwise seem lacking.
